I am the grandparent of two boys on the autism spectrum. The oldest is 21 and the youngest is 12. My family moved to Auburn in 1952 when I was four years old. I married my high school sweetheart in 1969 and we were blessed with a daughter and a son. Our son passed away in 1994 at the age of 20. At the same time, our daughter and grandson moved in with us and we began our journey with special education. It was not until the age of 14 that my oldest grandson was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and we realized how much we had missed with the proper intervention and therapies he needed. This led me to work with our other officers to form Lee County Autism Resource & Advocacy (LCARA) in 2013. I do not want other families to have to endure what we did with the unknown and how to acquired resource and support. I hope you will join us in spreading awareness of, not only autism, but LCARA. We are here to help.
